Week of November 8-12, 2011

Tuesday:
We had a theory test on hair design. This means like the shapes of haircuts and what looks good with what types of faces. We studied it last week, but didn't test on it until today. In specialty class we talked about out personal color horror stories with MaLinda. I talked about how one time, when I was younger, I was getting my hair highlighted and the stylist working on my hair had run out of bleach. How do you run out of bleach?? After class my friend Kari and I did manicures on each other for our worksheets.

Wednesday:
GUEST ARTIST!! Stephanie Kocielski, the artistic director for John Paul Mitchell Systems, came to speak to our school today. She was amazing!! She showed us a few hairstyles and cuts. I wish I had taken pictures of the cuts and styles as they were being preformed, but I did take a picture of the final products. They were really amazing and I only hope that I can be as talented as she is one day. Later that day I helped one of the girls in phase two with a perm on an elder woman. She is a former hair stylist so it was really cool to pick her brain! I had so much fun that day!!

Thursday:
Today in theory we started and finished our chapter on Shampooing. We will assess on it Friday. MaLinda planned a really fun color class. We got to play with different brands of color, such as Chi, Joico, and Rusk, and we were able to see how they are mixed and how long they take to process. That afternoon I helped one of my learning leaders apply an ink manicure to one of the future professionals. How that works is that we use ink works, which comes in any color you can imagine. We used orange in Sierra's hair. You lighten what every pieces the guest wants to have colored and let it process until blonde (like you would with highlights) and then cover the blonde with the ink works. That will process for about 10 minutes. To make it more vibrant you can tap it with your smoothing iron to help it brighter.

Friday:
In theory we took our assessments, I made an 89, woo!! In specialty class with MaLinda we made color commercials. My group talked about Chi color and I would say that we won the competition. After we had all gone, we did a joke commercial that MaLinda recorded on her iPad and put it on youtube. It was a lot of fun and just a joke! Ha. Here's the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mujq1IeBXCg&feature=youtu.be
That afternoon I was on dispense duty, which means working the color bar. We had about 45 guests on the clinic floor that afternoon we were about as busy as if it were a Saturday!

Saturday:
To start out the day, I worked on my mannequin in theory room. I did a shampoo set with half pin curls. After I finished that, I got a guest: a men's pedicure, ooo that was fun! After that I did a comfort zone perm, which means a perm that I'm comfortable with doing, so I choose to do a helicpoter perm. For a helicopter perm you will section the hair in 4 segments and put the hair in ponytails. You will pick whichever perm rods you wish and roll it like a perm. You would do this technique to achieve beachy waves. After that I did a regular french braid on my mannequin. Soon after, the hot water ran out at the school so the front desk had to call all the guests for the rest of the day and cancel their appointments. We did a major school clean up after that because we had no guests to take care of!

Week of November 2-5, 2011

The past two weeks have been very busy. Not this past week before was a FANTASTIC week!! To start things off, we had Tuesday off. The first Tuesday of every month we don't have because the school staff has training. So instead of school, I went to work! Haha. I work at Hair Impressions, A Paul Mitchell Focus Salon in Tuscaloosa, AL as a receptionist, or a "reservationist" as my boss likes to call it. I have learned a lot in the salon, but it is almost like I had to take 10 steps back once I got in school. I just didn't realize how much went into cosmetology! Anywho, I went to work and then we resumed school on Wednesday.
My core class and I are no longer proteges!!!! We are officially in adaptive and are no longer babied by the staff. We now get to be on the clinic floor in the afternoons to work on our worksheets and we get walk in guests! Yayyy!!! So, during theory we discussed the test that we were to have on Friday: The Principles of Hair Design. Then in specialty class we did square graduation haircuts. A graduation is the hair is pulled below 90 degrees. Anything above 90 degrees would be layers. When there is no elevation,  it is called a one length.
Below is our diagramming cheat sheet.  We diagram hair cuts, color services, and styling and finishings when ever we preform the service on a guest or mannequin.

The pictures below are from our Cutting Cards. These are also cheat sheets for Future Professionals to make sure they are preforming what the guest wants.

So, on Wednesday we did square graduation:

After specialty class and lunch, we went out on the floor to work on our worksheets. I did a basic all over color (picture and instructions to come later), a round one length, a round brush finishing style, and we had a mini class on razor cutting. We aren't technically going to learn about razor cutting until Creative, but it is a good way to take out weight in a hair cut and for shaping layers.

On Thursday we learned that we were to have a guest artist on Friday! Kelly Cardenas, from Kelly Cardenas Salon in Las Vegas and Chicago! We learned in theory that we were not going to have a test the next day and that it was to be postponed until Tuesday! Which was a blessing because many of us had makeup tests the next morning at 8:30. Which for me, means leaving Tuscaloosa at 7... but it wasn't bad! We reviewed in theory and then in specialty class that day, square layers! Now layers, I'm comfortable with. With square layers, everything is either pulled to the ceiling or the wall. The hair is ALWAYS pulled at a 90degree angle and there is no over direction.
(square layer diagrams and pictures)
After that we went onto the floor to work on our worksheets. I did a square one length hair cut and then someone had left over lightener, so I did a vertical slice on my baby doll's hair! It took about 40 minutes to apply the foils and FIVE hours to process! I had to shampoo her at home, but I didn't have a problem with that! THE  because the mannequins have chemicals on their hair to preserve it and it is hard to lightener to process through. You would use vertical slice on a client when they want peek-a-boo highlights or color. It is very pretty because it's not an intense highlight, it's very soft and organic.

On Friday, I arrived at school early to take a make up test. It was on Hair structure and it was brutal! But I made a 86% which I'm perfectly okay with! That morning in theory we played a review game, a take on Family Feud. In specialty class we did round layers and then we had a bit of extra time so we had a dance off! It was SO much fun! And I got 3rd place! Hahah.
(PICTURES)
Then, we had a visit from Kelly Cardenas!! He was SO inspiring and seemed to be such a wholesome, humble guy.  He talked to us about business techniques and how to succeed in a salon environment. He truly inspired me and made my MONTH!!! I attempted to convince him to open a salon with out school, and the salon I work at, owner, Robert Brown. SOOOO we'll see if that happens! That would honestly be a dream come true!

On Saturday I had my first guest!! I had a little 6 year old girl's hair cut and she was as sweet as she could be. She got a round one length hair cut and facial layers and she and her mother loved it!! I had no other guests for the rest of the day so I worked on my worksheet. I got a platinum card finished. A platinum card is when you take an 1/8 of an inch section of hair and lighten it in foils. Every single hair on the head is foiled, so the client is all over blonde.

This was a fantastic week both in school and out. I learned a lot this week about what really matters and what doesn't. It was a very educational week no matter what I was doing. And the fact that I met Kelly Cardenas just MADE my week!!

HALOWEEN!!!!

For the last week of school that we had in October, we celebrated Halloween. We had a guest artist, Somica Spratley on Tuesday to show us spooky Halloween makeup. Somica specializes in special effects makeup. She owns Poison and Passion Makeup Artistry and she works at the MAC counter in the Birmingham Galleria as well. It was interesting because last year I took a Theater makeup class, and I learned a lot of the things that this woman showed us on Tuesday. I will post pictures of her work and then some of mine as well. That Friday, we had a makeup competition in our specialty class for Halloween makeup! We won in our class!! Well, we tied for first place, but we all got the same reward. I will post those pictures as well!

Now, here are some pictures from my stage makeup class. They are no where near as professional as Somica's work, but it's a good attempt!! The first two pictures are from our "Blood and Gore" day and my character was in a domestic dispute. The other two pictures were my final project and my character was a creepy marionette.

Here are the pictures from our makeup competition!! Our model is Kacy. Heather did her makeup and I did her hair!
