My core class and I are no longer proteges!!!! We are officially in adaptive and are no longer babied by the staff. We now get to be on the clinic floor in the afternoons to work on our worksheets and we get walk in guests! Yayyy!!! So, during theory we discussed the test that we were to have on Friday: The Principles of Hair Design. Then in specialty class we did square graduation haircuts. A graduation is the hair is pulled below 90 degrees. Anything above 90 degrees would be layers. When there is no elevation, it is called a one length.
Below is our diagramming cheat sheet. We diagram hair cuts, color services, and styling and finishings when ever we preform the service on a guest or mannequin.

So, on Wednesday we did square graduation:

After specialty class and lunch, we went out on the floor to work on our worksheets. I did a basic all over color (picture and instructions to come later), a round one length, a round brush finishing style, and we had a mini class on razor cutting. We aren't technically going to learn about razor cutting until Creative, but it is a good way to take out weight in a hair cut and for shaping layers.

On Thursday we learned that we were to have a guest artist on Friday! Kelly Cardenas, from Kelly Cardenas Salon in Las Vegas and Chicago! We learned in theory that we were not going to have a test the next day and that it was to be postponed until Tuesday! Which was a blessing because many of us had makeup tests the next morning at 8:30. Which for me, means leaving Tuscaloosa at 7... but it wasn't bad! We reviewed in theory and then in specialty class that day, square layers! Now layers, I'm comfortable with. With square layers, everything is either pulled to the ceiling or the wall. The hair is ALWAYS pulled at a 90degree angle and there is no over direction.

After that we went onto the floor to work on our worksheets. I did a square one length hair cut and then someone had left over lightener, so I did a vertical slice on my baby doll's hair! It took about 40 minutes to apply the foils and FIVE hours to process! I had to shampoo her at home, but I didn't have a problem with that! THE because the mannequins have chemicals on their hair to preserve it and it is hard to lightener to process through. You would use vertical slice on a client when they want peek-a-boo highlights or color. It is very pretty because it's not an intense highlight, it's very soft and organic.

On Friday, I arrived at school early to take a make up test. It was on Hair structure and it was brutal! But I made a 86% which I'm perfectly okay with! That morning in theory we played a review game, a take on Family Feud. In specialty class we did round layers and then we had a bit of extra time so we had a dance off! It was SO much fun! And I got 3rd place! Hahah.

Then, we had a visit from Kelly Cardenas!! He was SO inspiring and seemed to be such a wholesome, humble guy. He talked to us about business techniques and how to succeed in a salon environment. He truly inspired me and made my MONTH!!! I attempted to convince him to open a salon with out school, and the salon I work at, owner, Robert Brown. SOOOO we'll see if that happens! That would honestly be a dream come true!
On Saturday I had my first guest!! I had a little 6 year old girl's hair cut and she was as sweet as she could be. She got a round one length hair cut and facial layers and she and her mother loved it!! I had no other guests for the rest of the day so I worked on my worksheet. I got a platinum card finished. A platinum card is when you take an 1/8 of an inch section of hair and lighten it in foils. Every single hair on the head is foiled, so the client is all over blonde.
This was a fantastic week both in school and out. I learned a lot this week about what really matters and what doesn't. It was a very educational week no matter what I was doing. And the fact that I met Kelly Cardenas just MADE my week!!
